Description :

Organic phosphorus is involved in almost every biological process organic forms of phosphorus often dominate in soils and aquatic systems and many organisms possess complex mechanisms enabling them to access phosphorus from organic compounds however organic phosphorus remains the most poorly understood aspect of the global phosphorus cycle. Phosphorus is essential for life yet is often the element most limiting for biological productivity although most organisms take up phosphorus in an inorganic form organic forms frequently dominate in soils and aquatic systems up to this point the role of organic phosphorus and mechanisms for its dynamics have been poorly understood. Section 1 3 chapters describes analytical techniques used to characterize organic phosphorus compounds in environmental samples with chapters dedicated to state of the art procedures involving chromatographic separation nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Utilization of soil organic phosphorus by higher plants this paper specifically focuses on the importance of organic phosphorus as a source of phosphorus for plant nutrition in particular the importance of rhizosphere phosphatase activity and its role in hydrolysing organic phosphorus in soil is considered. This book contains state of the art reviews of organic phosphorus characterization and transformations in the environment it includes 17 chapters organized into 3 main sections section 1 3 chapters describes analytical techniques used to characterize organic phosphorus compounds in environmental samples with chapters dedicated to state of
